Burnout therapy in London
You're sleeping, but you wake up exhausted. Work that once held your interest now feels pointless, and a weekend or a holiday doesn't touch it. If that sounds familiar, you may be dealing with burnout rather than ordinary stress, and it's worth getting support before it becomes unmanageable.
I offer therapy for burnout in person in Fitzrovia, central London, and online.
What burnout looks like
Unlike ordinary stress, burnout doesn't tend to ease with a weekend off or a holiday, it's often marked by a deeper exhaustion, a sense of detachment from work that once felt meaningful, and a creeping doubt about your own effectiveness, even when your performance hasn't actually slipped. It can also show up as cynicism, irritability, withdrawal from colleagues, or simply going through the motions in a job that used to feel engaging.
Why it happens
Burnout is rarely just about the environment someone is in, it's usually shaped by that environment alongside how an individual responds to it: the expectations they hold of themselves, the way they cope under pressure, and patterns that may go back further than the job itself.
How therapy for burnout helps
CBT can help address the immediate patterns that sustain burnout, such as overworking, difficulty switching off, or an inability to say no, alongside building more sustainable ways of managing energy and pressure day to day. Where burnout is bound up with longer-standing beliefs about self-worth or achievement, schema therapy can help address these deeper roots, so recovery isn't just about stepping back from work, but about building something more sustainable for the long term.
Not sure if it's burnout?
Burnout and stress overlap, but they call for different responses. My article Burnout or stress? The signs, and how to recover covers the signs, why burnout happens, and a few questions to help you take stock.
