Stress counselling and therapy in London

You can't switch off in the evenings, Sunday nights come with a knot of dread, and the volume of what's expected never seems to shrink. Work stress is common, but that doesn't make it something you just have to put up with.

I offer stress counselling and therapy for work stress in person in Fitzrovia, central London, and online.

What workplace stress looks like

Whether it's a demanding role, a difficult dynamic with a manager or colleague, or the accumulated weight of long-term pressure, workplace stress can affect every part of life (sleep, relationships, and sense of self). It can show up as constant tension or irritability, difficulty switching off outside of work hours, dread ahead of the working week, or a persistent sense of being overwhelmed by the volume or pace of what's expected. Stress is usually tied to something specific, and tends to have an "on" and "off" quality, intense during a busy period, easing once things settle. Left unaddressed for too long, though, it can be one of the paths that leads towards burnout, which is why it's worth taking seriously in its own right.

What kind of therapy helps with stress?

CBT is often well-suited to workplace stress, as it helps identify and shift the specific thoughts and behaviours, such as overworking, avoidance, or catastrophising, that keep the stress cycle going, alongside building practical strategies for managing pressure day to day. Where certain kinds of pressure feel disproportionately difficult to manage, we'll also look at any underlying patterns, drawing on schema therapy where it's useful, so the response to stress becomes more sustainable over time, not just the situation itself.

Signed off work with stress?

If you've already been signed off, my article Signed off work with stress? What happens next, and how to use the time well covers fit notes, sick pay, phased returns and reasonable adjustments, and how to make the time off count.

Stress or burnout?

Stress usually eases when the pressure does. If a break hasn't helped, it may be burnout. Burnout or stress? The signs, and how to recover explains the difference, and you can read about therapy for burnout.
